I got back from my surf trip, well rested, and with a focused mind. I hit the ground running. I've only been back less than 2 weeks and I am already designing and creating new and exciting builds. All of these new builds are for artists that I respect so much, so being able to create and collaborate with them on an instrument that they will play - is really something special.
I am not going to go into too much detail on the builds, as they are forming and coming together as we speak. But I will give you a summary:
The first build is for a friend Robert Randolph, who is such a talent that collaborating with him on any level is really special for me. We are working on a Resophonic Lap Steel that will blend some of his favorite qualities into one instrument.
I am also working on a 8-string lap steel for my Cindy Cashdollar - who I am a big fan of. She is a super sweet and super talented lady that keeps blowing me away with her consistency and style. We are keeping this modern, but with a retro style. I have some new carving details that I am excited to try out on her build. I will keep you posted.
Lastly, I am conjuring up a design for the great Greg Leisz, who is currently on tour with Jackson Browne (who hasn't Greg toured with though?) We just began working on a short scale lap steel that will suit all his needs - for tone, and performance on stage. It will be interesting to see what develops.
All in all, I am really happy with the growth and reception of lap steel guitar. The numbers of players keeps on growing and growing, much in part to the great players that I am working with. We are seeing growth not only in the United States, but in Europe and now Asia. It is such a cool instrument, with such a unique and emotional sound - how great that I am a part of it all!!
